Mirena IUD Linked to Serious Side Effects

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a contraceptive in December of 2000, Mirena (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is a device that is inserted in the uterus and releases the hormone levonorgestrel to prevent pregnancy. It is designed to last for five years, at which point it can be removed and replaced by a qualified professional. In spite of the benefits the Mirena IUD was seen to offer, including the convenience of a contraceptive that would last for five years, it has been linked to serious side effects.

The most serious of adverse events associated with Mirena is the shifting of the IUD, which can lead to the perforation of the uterine wall and even migration of the device into other areas of the body. Surgical intervention is the only treatment when this occurs. A trained surgeon will need to remove the device and repair any tears in the uterus or other organs. This particular side effect, termed extra-uterine migration, can cause a considerable amount of pain and may lead to bleeding and infection. Depending on the extent of damage the uterus sustains, the patient may require a complete hysterectomy. It could be life-threatening if a patient does not seek immediate treatment.

In addition to device migration and uterine perforation, there are other side effects that have been reported as potentially linked to Mirena intrauterine devices. These include:

  • Expulsion of the device
  • Dislocation of the device
  • Perforation of the uterine wall
  • Severe vaginal bleeding
  • Infection
  • Abscesses
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pregnancy while the device is implanted
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Infertility

All of these side effects may seriously affect a patient's quality of life. Our goal as attorneys is to represent the women who have been harmed by this device and to help them regain the same quality of life they once enjoyed. We can accomplish this through Mirena IUD lawsuits by securing financial compensation to help them rebuild and by holding the responsible party accountable to bring them peace of mind in knowing that justice has been served.
